![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And, no spoilers, but once the film ends, it actually ends, sans any kind of “Egads, the nightmare isn’t really over!” cliffhanger that has sullied many an otherwise solid horror movie. The final section goes on a bit too long with added complications that merely exist to up the violence quotient, but the final payoff is unexpectedly satisfying. It is not really until the last fifteen minutes or so that Lights Out truly descends into popcorn-flying scary territory, but it delivers the goods when it gets there, and it is never less-than-engrossing before then. Lights out pelicula completa movie#The film is a grim family drama first and a horror movie second, even as those two things eventually collide. Yes, the film is scary when it needs to be, but the scares work because we genuinely care about the core characters and have an emotional interest in a positive outcome. If anything, our characters discover the would-be truth almost too quickly, but that also allows the audience to A) not be ahead of the movie and B) enter the film’s second half acutely aware of the dangers at play. This is not a film that dangles mysteries or critical exposition over our heads until the last possible minute. And it tells its story with a remarkable efficiency, trusting its actors (all of whom are terrific) to sell the relationships and create an instant bond with the audience. What it doesn’t do is drag out its story or artificially inflate its running time via arbitrarily inserted set pieces. The core gimmick is that the would-be threat can only get you in the dark, which creates a rather literal application of one of the oldest and most potent horror movie fears. Obviously, this is a supernatural horror film so you get your share of shocks, jump scares, and running tension. Truth be told, that’s all the plot you really need. Rebecca may have moved out, but she’s not going to abandon the little brother (Gabriel Bateman) who is still stuck with their mentally ill mother (Mario Bello). The family dynamic is obviously strained but with good intentions all about. Ditto Rebecca's relationship with her younger brother. The core romantic relationship (Teresa Palmer and Alexander DiPersia) is warm and affectionate right the bat, so we have an immediate interest in Rebecca and Bret’s happiness. It tells a tale of a broken family, yet it is filled with good and selfless people who make unexpectedly unselfish decisions throughout. What makes the film work is the surprising decency of all its primary characters. ![]()
